That\u00a0means <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elfontheshelf.com\/\">elves on shelves<\/a> are popping up in elementary classrooms (and living rooms) all over the place. The elf, children are told, keeps an eye on them and reports to Santa. The idea being that even when adults aren&#8217;t looking, someone still has their eyes on the children&#8217;s behavior.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is simple, and it comes from a good place: teachers (and parents) know the holidays are approaching, children are getting excited, and adults\u00a0worry (rightfully) that children will have extra difficulty regulating their behavior. So, the adults\u00a0offer a reward.\u00a0<em>If you can stay in control and be good this month, even when you think no one is looking, the elf will tell the adults\u00a0and you&#8217;ll be rewarded.<\/em> Seems like a good idea, right?<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that this kind of external motivation doesn&#8217;t help our children learn how to regulate their own behavior; it doesn&#8217;t help teach them to do the right thing. And worse, we&#8217;ve known about this &#8230;\u00a0for a long time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In a 1993 Harvard Business Review article entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/1993\/09\/why-incentive-plans-cannot-work\">Why Incentive Plans Cannot Work<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfiekohn.org\/\">Alfie Kohn<\/a> noted &#8220;when it comes to producing lasting change in attitudes and behavior&#8230; rewards, like punishment, are strikingly ineffective. Once the rewards run out, people revert to their old behaviors.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/home.ubalt.edu\/tmitch\/642\/Articles%20syllabus\/Deci%20Koestner%20Ryan%20meta%20IM%20psy%20bull%2099.pdf\">1999 meta-analysis of 128 studies<\/a>, Deci, Koestner, and Ryan found that &#8220;as predicted, engagement-contingent, completion-contingent, and performance-contingent rewards significantly\u00a0undermined free-choice intrinsic motivation [the ability to do the right thing simply because it&#8217;s the right thing] &#8230;\u00a0as did\u00a0all rewards, all tangible rewards, and all expected rewards.&#8221; They also noted that, &#8220;tangible rewards had a significant negative effect on intrinsic\u00a0motivation &#8230;\u00a0and this effect showed up with\u00a0participants ranging from preschool to college.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In his 2009 book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Drive-Surprising-Truth-About-Motivates\/dp\/1594484805\/\">Drive<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danpink.com\/\">Daniel Pink<\/a> discussed the seven deadly flaws of extrinsic motivation (what he calls carrots and sticks). These carrots and sticks\u00a0can:\n<ul>\n<li>extinguish intrinsic motivation<\/li>\n<li>diminish performance<\/li>\n<li>crush creativity<\/li>\n<li>crowd out good behavior<\/li>\n<li>encourage cheating, shortcuts, and\u00a0unethical behavior<\/li>\n<li>become addictive<\/li>\n<li>foster short-term thinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.benschersten.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/15750930699_10e64e62e1_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benschersten.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/15750930699_10e64e62e1_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"15750930699_10e64e62e1_o\" width=\"332\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Admittedly,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/home.ubalt.edu\/tmitch\/642\/Articles%20syllabus\/Deci%20Koestner%20Ryan%20meta%20IM%20psy%20bull%2099.pdf\">Deci, Koestner, and Ryan<\/a>\u00a0point out that\u00a0&#8220;although rewards can control people&#8217;s behavior\u2014indeed, that is\u00a0presumably why they are so widely advocated\u2014the primary negative\u00a0effect of rewards is that they tend to forestall self-regulation.\u00a0In other words, <em>reward contingencies undermine people&#8217;s taking responsibility for motivating or regulating themselves<\/em>&#8221; (my emphasis). But as teachers, isn&#8217;t one of our\u00a0goals to teach our students to take responsibility and regulate their own behavior (not simply have us control\u00a0it) &#8211; two things that our reward systems actually undermine?<\/p>\n<p>Are there a small percentage of students for whom\u00a0simply <em>getting through<\/em> the holidays is the goal? Sure. But should this be the default goal for the entire classroom? Definitely not.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers &#8211; we have to do more than just control\u00a0behavior, we have to teach responsibility and self-regulation. We want to cultivate students who will do the right thing because it&#8217;s the right thing, not because we&#8217;ll reward them. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsiveclassroom.org\/\">Responsive Classroom<\/a>\u00a0approach teaches us that effective reinforcing teacher language is, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsiveclassroom.org\/article\/teaching-without-rewards\">&#8220;clear and direct, genuine and respectful, and specific<\/a>&#8220;; it&#8217;s not used in a manipulative way like reward systems. Teacher language is a powerful thing; tell your students they are\u00a0working hard, and how their attention to behavior benefits others. &#8220;Verbal rewards &#8211; or what\u00a0is usually labeled positive feedback in the motivation literature &#8211;\u00a0had a significant positive effect on intrinsic motivation&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/home.ubalt.edu\/tmitch\/642\/Articles%20syllabus\/Deci%20Koestner%20Ryan%20meta%20IM%20psy%20bull%2099.pdf\">Deci, Koestner, and Ryan, 1999<\/a>); this is what we really want. Aim to build a strong and trusting community in your classroom and you won&#8217;t need elves to extort good behavior out of your students (and they don&#8217;t really work anyway).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if you&#8217;re using an elf for non-coercive strategies\u00a0like practicing writing letters to your elf or calculating the distance\/rate of movement he had to get from one spot to another that&#8217;s totally fine.
